Thrown a lifeline by Israel at the weekend, England opted for suicide led by goalkeeper Scott Carson whose howler set us on the way to Euro 2008 elimination.
FOR an England fan, it doesn’t get any worse than this. To go out fighting near the end of a major tournament is one thing. But to fail to qualify from a poor group? Even after little Israel threw us a lifeline with their heroics against Russia? England did the hard work last night, dragging themselves level after gifting Croatia two soft goals. They only had to buckle down and do a professional job of closing out the game in the last 30 minutes. It’s the job those players do every single week in the Premiership — and for which they get paid wages the rest of us can only dream of. But even that basic task was beyond a team who looked like they’d never played together before. They were out-thought and out-played by a side who didn’t even NEED to get a result. The arrogance of our inept manager is breathtaking.
